Captain Freddie Cooper Retires After 28 Years

A farewell dinner was held at Engine 18 on Saturday, May 24th in honor of Capt. Freddy Cooper.  Capt. Cooper is retiring after 28 years on the job - in various positions.  The members of Engine 18 and Truck 7 and the whole DCFD family wish you a long and happy retirement!

BFC James Blair Retires After 37 Years 10 Months

Battalion Fire Chief James Blair's long career was celebrated with friends and colleagues at Ulah Bistro on U Street, Northwest.  Chief Blair is retiring after exactly 37 years, 10 months on the job.  First appointed in 1970 to Engine 15, Blair retires as the BFC in charge of PSO and Compliance.  DC Fire & EMS wishes you a long and successful retirement!

Last Night For Special Ops. Battalion Chief Damian Wilk

Saturday, May 17th, was an unusually busy night for the Special Operations Battalion Chief, with hazmat calls, suspicious vehicles, a car into the building, and box alarm responses. For BFC Damian Wilk, the special ops chief that night, it was also his last.
 
Chief Wilk leaves DC Fire and EMS with 31 years of service to the department.

Firefighter Eric Waddy of Rescue Squad 1 was honored by his peers during his promotion dinner on Thursday, May 8th.

Waddy, who has been promoted to sergeant, was given a plaque and a humidor to help him indulge in his cigar habit.

In turn, Eric provided all assembled a sumptuous meal of steak and shrimp with all the trimmings.


Chief Fleming and Chief Herlihy Retirement

A retirement luncheon was held Friday April 11th for Assistant Fire Chief Services Tom Herlihy and Deputy Fire Chief Richard Fleming.  Both DCFD vets were lauded with congratulations by Assistant Chief Brian Lee and with proclamations from the Mayor's office.

DC FIRE Wins championship game 8-3. Down 2-0 going into the second, the team came out firing. Goals by Bureau with 4 Candleana with 2 .Dickey added 1 and Mcmahon also had 1 with a penalty shot.Welch had 1 assist and Martin had 3. The goal keeper Tarbell with 27 saves kept us in the game.


Sgt. George Barksdale Retires After 34 Years

Sgt. George Barksdale, Batt. 3 Aide, is retiring, closing a 34-year career in the DC Fire Department.

Members of Engine 15 and Squad 3 treated George to dinner last week – and on Monday – George returned to treat the firehouse to a steak dinner.

Firefighter Billy Rimm Retires

Billy Rimm of Squad 1 celebrated his final day on the job with a visit by the fire chief.  Rimm, who retires with 30 years and nine months of service, has worked the last 12 years at Squad 1.  Good luck!

Engine 9 #2 Platoon Receives "Gold Medals"

Chief Benson (Sp. Ops BFC #2) handed out GOLD MEDALS at the Quarters of Engine Co. 4 to the Crew of Engine Co. 9 #2 plt:

& F/M S. Gavagan for 'a Job well done' on the Fire at 5408 1st Pl. N.W., while fighting the BLAZE that took over 4 hours & 65 Firemen to extinguish.

Captain Ed Sims Retires

A celebration luncheon was held last week to honor the career of Capt. Ed Sims, who retired this month.

Sims, who has worked the past two years at PSO, is retiring after 29 years on the job.  He was presented with a drawing of Engine 24, a place he called his ‘home away from home’.

THE RECENT DELIVERY OF TOYS TO CHILDRENS NATIONAL MEDICAL CENTER FROM THE NATIONAL CAPITAL REGIONAL FIRE DEPARTMENTS AND THE US MARINES.

THE PICURES DO NOT DO IT JUSTICE, BECAUSE WE FILLED THE ATRIUM UP WITH TOYS. IT IS HEAD HIGH ON THE MEN AND WOMEN THAT UNLOADED 9 TRUCKS FULL OF GIFTS TO CNMC. IT WAS ESTIMATED THAT OVER 25,000 TOYS WERE SHIPPED TO THE HOSPITAL.

WORDS CANNOT SIMPLY EXPRESS MY APPRECIATION FOR ALL OF THE AGENCIES THAT HAVE WORKED SO HARD TO MAKE THIS CAMPAIGN A GREAT SUCCESS.

THE ATTACHED SPREADSHEET SHOWS THE TOTALS OF THE TOYS COLLECTED BY THE NATIONAL CAPITOL REGION FIRE DEPARTMENTS. APROXIMATLEY 62,100 WERE COLLECTED THROUGH THE 2007 US MARINES TFT CAMPAIGN, A MONUMENTAL TASK. I HAVE ESTIMATED THAT SINCE 2003, THE FIRE DEPARTMENTS IN THE NATIONAL CAPITOL REGION, HAVE COLLECTED ON BEHALF OF THE US MARINES, 220,00 TOYS WORTH BETWEEN $ 2.5 AND $ 3.1 MILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF PRODUCT.

Palisades Community Cookout hosted each fall by Engine 29/Truck 5. Food provided by DCFD Firefighting BBQ Team and community members. Activities include bobbing for apples, face painting, tours of the apparatus, rides on the parade truck, blue grass and lots of food!


Hal Bruno and Walter Gold Named Honorary Fire Chiefs

Fire Chief Dennis L. Rubin used the annual Friendship Fire Association Christmas Dinner on December 18th to surprise two stalwart fire department champions with an "Honorary Chief" designation in the DC Fire & EMS Department. 

National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Board Chairman Hal Bruno was recognized for his lifelong service as a volunteer in fire departments in locations where he has lived and his continued dedication and support of the nation's fire service. 

Active FFA volunteer and president Walter Gold was honored for his 40+ years of dedicated service to the DC Fire & EMS Department.

Lt. A.J. Winterwerp Retires

Steak, chicken and rock fish was the fare as colleagues of Lt. A.J. Winterwerp gathered at Engine 16 to wish him well in his retirement.  January 3rd was Lt. Winterwerp’s last day as the OIC of Engine 16 #4 Platoon.  Lt. Winterwerp ended a 28-1/2 year career surrounded by his parents and three daughters and about 30 members of the department.

“On Sunday December 30, 2007 the members of Engine 13 and truck 10 had a dinner in honor of the retirement of Lt. Richard Kriner. The good Lieutenant has 28 years of dedicated service to the District of Columbia Fire Department.  Many members past and present stopped by to wish Rick a long and healthy retirement.  Seems like Engine 13 is becoming a ghost town with all the recent retirements from there.  Here’s wishing you a long and healthy retirement”


Christmas Comes to Barry Farms

For the fourth year in a row, DC Fire & EMS crews participated in a toy distribution event for needy children at Barry Farms.  The campaign is coordinated by International Relocation Worldwide, a moving company whose owner grew up in Barry Farms.

Hundreds of toys collected over the course of the year were distributed to several dozen residents in Southeast Washington. 


Mayor Greets Injured Firefighters Over Breakfast

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty sat down to breakfast this morning with the four firefighters seriously injured in a blaze in late October. 

The Mayor welcomed the men back to Engine 4 and wished them a merry Christmas.  “We’re just happy you’re with us – and able to celebrate the holidays,” said Fenty,  who, along with Ward 1 Councilman Jim Graham, praised their efforts and the efforts of all the members of the DC Fire & EMS Department. 

Sgt. Mike LaCore and Firefighters Charlie Shyab, Doug Donnelly and Kenneth Humphries were seriously injured battling a 2nd Alarm fire in the 600 block of 4th Street, Northeast on October 29th.  The most seriously injured, Sgt. LaCore, was released last week from the Washington Hospital Center and remains in treatment.  Firefighter Donnelly is already back to work; Firefighter Humphries will return next tour; and Firefighter Shyab hopes to be back at work by March of ’08.

On Thursday Dec 20, 2007 a dinner was held at the quarters of Engine 13  for Firefighter/Technician  Ralph “Ike” Iacangelo of E13#2 and Jeff “JT” Williams of E29#2. Ike and JT have a combined total of 52 years of service to the citizens of the District of Columbia. 

The catering duties where handles by the DCFD BBQ team featuring Mike “the dawg” Skahill and Bret Sutter.   We wish Ike and JT the best in there retirement and gentlemen, thank you for a job well done.


Deputy Fire Chief John Burger Visits E11 and T6 Quarters for Farewell Tour

The members of E-11, T-6, A-11, B-4 said goodbye to a good friend last night. DFC John Burger came by for one more firehouse meal before his retirement. The festivities were slightly delayed when the second of two, two alarm fires left the guest of honor to finish the cooking. We wish John many happy and healthy years of retirement; you will be missed.

Deputy Fire Chief John Burger’s 29-year-career was celebrated Friday with the traditional luncheon at Phillip’s Flagship Restaurant in Southwest.  AFCS Herlihy presented Burger with a plaque in front of about 30 current and retired employees who gathered to wish him well in his retirement.

Engine 11 Truck 6 Congratulate 4th BFC Michael Conners On His Retirement After 30 Years

The 2nd Platoon of 11Engine & 6Truck would like to congratulate the 4th Battalion Fire Chief, Michael Connors and wish him well during his retirement. A dinner was held in his honor on November 14th. Chief Connors had little time to celebrate during the day as he ran over a dozen calls throughout the city. On behalf of the house, department, and citizens of the District, thank you for your 30 years of service and dedication.


Deputy Chief Talbert Celebrates 30 Years

Members of Rescue Squad 2 and Engine 2 recently honored Deputy Chief James Talbert upon his 30th Annivesary with D.C. Fire and EMS. They surprised the chief with a cake and a plaque. Chief Talbert presently serves as the Operations Deputy on #2 platoon.

The Tenleytown community got to meet and be greeting by their local firefighters as Engine 20 and Truck 12 held a community day on Saturday, October 27th.

Members of both companies, assisted by the Public Information Office and
Fire Prevention Division, displayed their apparatus and donned firefighting gear to the delight of neighborhood children. Fire safety literature was also handed out and the Fire Safety House could also beviewed.

The firefighters also cooked up a storm, providing hotdogs, hamburgers and other goodies to the scores of visitors.
